Set Up a Campaign in the IL2 FMB
Does the idea of making a campaign intimidate you? You've probably read about problems people have had with their campaigns not working. Forget it!
We'll use a 5-step method to get campaigns set up in just a few minutes. Note that this tutorial is about how to set up the campaign files and folders, not about how mission design. The video & notes are below, including a troubleshooting guide!

5 Steps to Setting Up a Campaign: Summary of the Vid
Watch the vid for the details. Here's a brief summary:
- Copy an existing campaign and put it in the appropriate country folder.
- Change the name of the folder to your campaign name. Note: NO SPACES or special characters other than the hypen "-" and underscore "_"!!
- In the info.properties file, change the Name and Description. Use "\n" for new lines. Don't make paragraphs with the Enter button!! You can delete the line beginning with Short if it exists.
- In the campaign.ini, change the [Main] section if necessary. Remember Allies: Red/RU; Axis: Blue/DE. Also list your missions, taking care of the names. No spaces again!! Remember to add the ".mis" after each mission name!
- Copy your missions over to the campaign folder. Check their names match those in the campaign.ini!!
Note: If your missions don't have Player Targets (objectives), make sure "No Instant Success" is set to OFF in the Difficulty Settings, otherwise you'll keep repeating the 1st mission! There are several tutorials on player targets on this site. Check them out on the home page.
That's it. It just takes a few minutes to set up your own campaign. Nothing to be afraid of, right?
Ah, my campaign won't start! Troubleshooting guide
- Is the campaign's folder in the "/...Missions/Campaign" folder?!
- Have you selected a Player aircraft in the missions?!
- Are the missions listed in the campaign.ini actually in the campaign's folder?
- Does the folder name have spaces or characters other than "-" and "_"?
- Is your campaign.ini's [Main] section correct? Allies = Red & RU; Axis = Blue & DE.
- Have you added ".mis" after each mission listed in the campaign.ini?
The Country Folders
Here's the list of countries for the Campaign folders:
- DE - Germany
- FI - Finland
- GB - RAF (Royal Air Force)
- HU - Hungary
- IN - IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy)
- JA - IJA (Imperial Japanese Army)
- Pl - Poland
- NN - None (can create yourself in Windows)
- RA - RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force)
- RN - RN (Royal Navy)
- RO - Romania
- RU - USSR (Russia)
- Sk - Slovakia
- UM - USMC (United States Marine Corps)
- UN - USN (United States Navy)
- US - USAAF (United States Army Air Force)
Final thought
It's a great feeling creating your own little part of World War 2 by making a campaign. Now that you've seen how easy it is (with a bit of care!), get creative and immerse yourself in your own storyline. And good luck staying alive...

Very nice Tutorial(s)! :)
So, immediatly I tried it out...But now, where I put missions together to a campaign, it won't work. Your nice troubleshooting brought no results. All seem to be well.
Problem: The briefing screen doesn't load, by starting the campaign.
Hope for help...

Hey, First let me say your tutoril is great.
Second, i created a campaign using the italian map released in 4.08 using the italian air force. I have created a file in \campaign called "IT" for the italian air force. i have included all my missions and tracks info files and .ini files, it all appears in the game in the career menu but when i push start, it fails miserably... I think its the all.ini file the manual talks about (poorly).. any chance you know whats going on?

Very good tutorial, but what about multiplayer campaigns? I didn't found any examples at german forums. Maybe you are able to help me. I just want to put some coop-missions together to a campaign.
best wishes from Germany
Does this work the same way for multiplayer campaigns?
Would it be possible for you to create a download where everything to create a campaign is there, you just fill in the blanks

hey Nutcase-great site. Cant host a coop game with another computer. Followed your steps and NG. Any suggestions?
Thx greatly
Flying nutcase, your site is awesome! I am new to it and the FMB. I really want to create a multiplayer campaign so that my friends and I can move right into the next mission. Is there a way to do this or do I have to stick to the Co-op method? Thanks a lot!

Hi Reflected,
Give yourself an overly-generous rank, like the highest rank, and you should be right. There are lots of posts in the Ubi Mission Builder forum about this.
Good luck!
I set up my first campaign. It is totally spoiled: it's meant to be played as No2 of red section - "united kingdom army none", so RS -B, but sometimes I find myself in another flight, or even another type of plane! I checked no2 as player in every mission. How do I make it work? Thanks!
Wheelsup, thanks for the input!
Andy, for a Greece folder (and others), go to www.AllAircraftArcade.com, which is home of the IL2 Modding community, and do a search for "new country folders Greece". There will be one result, about new nations.
And your dream will surely come true!
Good luck!
Hello everybody,
I want to make a greek campaign, but i want to be in a seperate folder and to be displayed at the campaign menu as Greece or GR.Is there any way to doit?
Hello Flying Nutcase
Your tutorials have been very helpful for me too.
I have watched every video on this site and read all of the tutorials.
Will you be updating your countries list on this page?
I know I did it but I think it would look nicer in your format.
Version 4.08m has 4 countries that you do not list.
I think they were a part of version 4.04M too.
This is what I get when I put these country codes in the Single missions folder and compare them to the Pilot Career Campaign folders.
DU - NL (Royal Netherlands Air Force)
FR - France (Normandie-Nieman)
RO - Romania
RZ - RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force)
If you do update this list you should move NN to go between JA (IJN Imperial Japanes Navy) & PL (Poland).
I am not complaining I just want your site to be the best it can be too.
Cheers

Hello again. I have figured out everything, so now, I have started on a campaign. I will call it "Cross of Lorraine". The player takes the role of Pierre Marque, a French pilot who graduated FAF flight school in 1935 and, when war breaks out in Spain, volunteers to go to Spain and fight the Nationalists. The rest of the campaign takes place during WWII, from the French Expeditionary Forces in Poland and Norway (and a bit of Finland in between), to the Italian invasion of France and the BOB, to the Vichy Air Force, to the VVS, to the RNZAF, to the Normandie Niemen, and then to the Free French Forces in Italy and Europe itself... and a nice little surprise in Vietnam and the Pacific in the end.
So, my question is: How do I upload this campaign to M4T? When I'm done with it, anyway?
I wanted to say sorry to FlyingNutcase. It really was a bonehead thing of me to ask about where he was. So, I'm sorry, FlyingNutcase, and anyone who's probably thinking I'm a bonehead right now. Awesome site, by the way. Really helpful.
So, Shrewmeister, the answer to your question is yes and no. There is no way that I know of to make new maps. I wish you could, but you can't.
Now, I have seen screenshots of people who make maps, but these are mods, mods that you use at your own risk. I'm sorry if I'm not allowed to mention mods, just in case, but I'm just answering your question, Shrewmeister. It's a good question, though.
I was wondering, when you make a campaign, can you make all new maps, intead of using the ones that came with the game. Thanks for any help.
~shrewmeister
Dood, i don;t think Nutcase can be everywhere at once, i'll try to handle your question. After i solved my problem with the sides thing, i did a mission that involved bombers. Do do a bombing raid, first select the bombers, and in option of the planes, make sure they have bombs to carry. Once done, put how many bombers you want and set their rally points near the area you want to bomb. At the right waypoint they need to bomb, clicl "Gattack" on scroll bar, and then the "Set" button and set it on an enemy ground target. Keep in mind the altitude and speed of bomber in regards to your waypoint.
Your tutorial seems very simple and clear to me. I was inspired to try it. Last night I experimented, and everything seemed to fall into place. I had no problem placing the aircraft and waypoints on the map, though I didn't complete a mission. This morning, the control+click does neither. What have I wrought? Any ideas?
Hello? FlyingNutcase? Please answer my earlier question and this:
I tried downloading French Wings from M4T, I put
the file for it in my Sturmovik folder, but it is not downloaded. What did I do wrong? Site's awesome. Thanks! DO ANSWER!
Oh, wtf. Sorry about the typo if i confused anyone. The default co-op is Germany's Luftwaffe vs Soviet's UVV. i would like them changed to IJN vs USN

I was wondering how to set a faction, like IJN instead of default German. I built a mission from scratch for Co-op, but the sides are Germany vs Luftwaffe, and i want it to be USA vs IJN (its in Midway).
Hello, FlyingNutcase. I was trying to make an American landing in Southern Italy with a different map, and I cannot get enough landing craft. When I put a bunch of it on the map, heading for the beach, I can't get it to land! How do I make these missions? And I can't get a lot of B-17s together for escorting, either. And how do I set up a bomber group to bomb an airfield? I've tried and tried and I can't do it.
Thanks for the help!
Hi mate.. Great site btw!
I'm currently constructing a campaign and I'm not sure how to get landing AI aircraft to taxi in and park up.. Is there a way I can do this? At the moment they are landing and then dissappearing halfway down the runway!..
Would welcome any advice mate..
Hi Andy, That's awesome dude and I'm glad the site helped. I've not yet made such a long campaign. Enjoy the flying. S!
HeyHo Nutcase,
I´ve almost finished my P 47 Campaign. The Campaign starts with the "Transportation Plan" in May 44 and it is ending with the occupation of Germany in 45. I´ve created about 75 missions.
Thanks for the great help.

Hi Andy,
In the standard IL2, you can't create custom airfields, except based around test runways (in the Stationary Ships menu) which is really tricky stuff.
If you want to create full custom airfields, check out the mod work at www.AllAircraftArcade.com where there's a lot of original (and rather impressive) map work going on.
Here I am back again ;-). I´ve got another question: How can I place airfields on a map? Is there any way to place own airfields, which are not generated with tha map? I´m sking that, because I´m building a normandy campaign for the US and I wanted to take of at so called ALGs.
THX for your last advise.Looking forward to hear from you.
Tally Ho.

Hi Andy,
The instructions are independent of version number. Have you watched the video? The text summary is written with that in mind. If you can't view it, you'll find it on YouTube with search: il2 campaign tutorial.
I'll try to clarify what I meant by: "Copy an existing campaign and put it in the appropriate country folder". The easiest way to start a new campaign is to use the campaign structure of someone else's campaign. So just make a copy of a public campaign. If you've downloaded it, you'll have to stick it in one of the country folders, in the Missions\Campaign folder.
Again, the video should make this clearer.
Good luck and ask away if you have any other probs.
Cheers,
Flying Nutcase
Hey,
this site is really great work. But I did all these Things you said and it did´nt work. Could it be possible that my problem is in accoiation with the Patch 4.08 ? And can you please tell me, what do you want to say with "Copy an existing campaign and put it in the appropriate country folder"? Should I try it with the existing campaign of another country-folder?
Please help I´m definitly desperate.^^
