First IL2 Mission

Your First IL2 Mission

So you've never made a mission in the Full Mission Builder (FMB)? You're going to love this. We'll put together a nice little training mission where you're up against 1 enemy fighter. Oh, he'll start on your tail!

You'll soon have the flexibility to create your own custom missions, in a way not possible in the Quick Mission Builder (QMB). It's a sweet feeling, and it's likely that you'll be the next to be assimilated into the FMB addiction. lol. The video below covers the whole process:

You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 8 to view this video! (Click here for the download)

First IL2 Mission: Summary of the Vid

Before heading into the FMB, decide in which folder you'll save the mission. This is a Single mission, flying for the US. One way to organise things is to have a folder called My, in which you save all of your own missions. So 1 option is: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Single\US\My

...using the default Sturmi location. Create the My folder as usual in Windows: Right-click | New | Folder. Use Right-Click | Rename if necessary.

We're ready to go into the Full Mission Builder. Load Sturmi and click Full Mission Builder. That intimidating blank screen greets us. Do this...

  • Load a map: File | Load Map
  • Save the mission: File | Save, navigating to the path mentioned above. Save as Normandy Dogfight.mis or whatever.
  • Optionally, set time and weather via Edit | Conditions
  • Optionally, give the mission a name: Normandy Dogfight, which will show in the mission list + a Short Description, that summarises the mission when clicked on in the mission list + a Full Description, which is the briefing shown after loading a mission.
  • Select your fighter from the object menu: View | Object | Aircraft.
  • Place the first waypoint, with Cntrl-Click.
  • Plane 1 tab: Check 'Player' , so it's your aircraft. You can also choose a skin here.
  • Properties tab: Select a friendly squadron.
  • Waypoint tab: Put a starting Height and Speed.
  • Place the 2nd waypoint. The speed and altitude will be the same.
  • Put an enemy aircraft say 1km behind, following the above approach, but don't check Player! Set it's Skill too.

You should now be ready to rock 'n roll. Select File | Play (the mission is saved automatically) and you'll see your briefing. Click Fly and you should have a bandit ready to nail your butt. Good luck!

How to load the mission in the future?

If you want to make changes to the mission, fly it via the FMB. If not, go to Single, select Airforce as USAAF and Mission Type as My if that's where you put it. Select the the mission from the list below.

By the way, here's a list of the countries that relate to the folder names:

  • DE - Germany
  • FI - Finland
  • GB - RAF (Royal Air Force)
  • HU - Hungary
  • IN - IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy)
  • JA - IJA (Imperial Japanese Army)
  • NN - None
  • Pl - Poland
  • RA - RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force)
  • RN - RN (Royal Navy)
  • RO - Romania
  • RU - USSR (Russia)
  • Sk - Slovakia
  • UM - USMC (United States Marine Corps)
  • UN - USN (United States Navy)
  • US - USAAF (United States Army Air Force)

I hope that went smoothly for you. Even the basic skills covered above can bring hours of enjoyable flying. Just remember to select a player aircraft in your Single missions...

Hi, great site. Just wondering if I can set up a mission where English in spoken in the cockpit. Can't seem to accomplish that. Maybe it's something to do with the map. Even though I choose u.s. missions, Russian seems to spoken. thanks

My question. I been building maps off and onn for the past year and a half on Sturmovik FB. I now have the 1946 game and in Mission builder ther are plenty of extra's. On e of the extra's is coloured lights, on couple of games (single) i notice that the builder has raised these lights to a desired height i.e,. to make front rear lights on a truck. How can I raise these light to the height I want.

Hey, I am making a mission with the whole blitzkrieg theme. I want AI Stukas to dive bomb accuratly on ground targets but they keep diving past the target, then dropping their bombs, and then going after the ground target with their guns? Any ideas?

This is a wonderful way to get help, thank you.
Question: I want to build an Airbase from scratch so that: (1) I can place selectable, flyable planes in parking areas, so that you have to start them up, taxi on the ramp to get to the runway...(2) All my air fields are about 1 meter on top of the ground, so planes crash when I try to go on to the runway or taxi off of it. All other objects sit on ground level no matter what the terrain rolling hills ect. all objects sink about 1 meter or the thickness of the runway if I place them on the runway...every thing else I have got down...

Can you help me out?

It seems I can't get it to work.
I made a folder, loaded a map.
Everything so far was ok, until..
When I view the object, there is only the "type" tab, nothing else. I can just only view it.

This movie is very clear, thank you very much, but I still have a problem: If I want to fly with no marks and I but the option 'showing marks' off, I still have marks on my plane, and my squadron mates don't. What can I do about it?

Hey nutcase nice tuts, but how about one that covers making you own online dogfight missions where you can respawn and pick your aircraft every time. I can't seem to get it to work. Thanks though, I used to think the FMB was a pointless blue screen XD

Hi Mr Prawn,

Thanks very much for the comment. To go into 3D mode, select an object and hit the Enter key. The details about moving, movement speed etc are in the Manipulating Objects tutorial.

Bon chance!

Hi all. Apologies for not replying for so long. I've been away from IL2 for freak'n ages!

1) The videos SHOULD now play okay. I'm now using better tools for encoding.

2) Drew, thx for the comment. I too remember that 'blue screen of confusion'. Hmm...err...okay, File | Exit, lol.

3) Tallyman, thanks for the comment. It's nice to hear the tutorials helped you out.

4) Laser, thx for the comment. The old pages are buried away. If you want I could make PDFs of them. Please mail me via the "Write to Me" link at the top.

5) Leshgov, Have you been using IL2 mods? I've never had a Map Not Found error. Well, I guess you've got it sorted by now anyway. Good luck!

6) Nima, There are several new aircraft that you can fly, including the 'non-flyables'. Check out the mods at www.AllAircraftArcade.com and you'll be pleasantly surprised. My personal favorite is the Fi-156 Storch. Taking off and landing that bird in the wind (also a mod) is supreme.

7) Toby, Have you tried Shift-F2 (for friendlies) or Cntrl-F2 (for enemies) to see if the aircraft is in-game? Maybe you just put it further away than you thought!

----------

Cheers gents. I appreciate your feedback and emails!

Hi Nutcase, great site! I would have one request though, could you make available also the old pages (non-video based)? They are better suited to make a printable document. Or, if you have one already made ... :)

Thank you!

Hi Flaper,

Sorry mate, I missed your post.

Do you have trains working? If you have a working train, the text should look similar to in the vid.

Feel free to send the text of the mission file, via the 'Write to Me' link. Just copy the text after opening up the .mis.

Cheers.

Hi FoxBat,

As far as I know, it's possible in Dogfight mode. Select a flyable aircraft and go in-game. Once spawned, exit out and select a non-flyable. I think you can then take control, via external views.

Maybe someone else can confirm or correct that. It's been a couple of years since I heard about it.

Hi Jake,

To place a waypoint, use Ctrl + Click, i.e. click with the left mouse button while holding down the 'Control' key on your keyboard.

It's gotta work!
